The North America Rail Pass is developed jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

With the pass, you can travel along 28,000 miles of picturesque railways throughout the U.S. and Canada. So get ready to discover spectacular cities and landscapes of North America as only Amtrak and VIA can show them to you. A 10% discount is available to Seniors, Children (age 2-18), and students (when they show their Student Advantage Card in the U.S. or ISIC card in Canada).

The 30-Day North America Rail Pass is good for travel systemwide on both Amtrak and VIA, and can be purchased by international or domestic travelers, including residents of the United States and Canada. Trip must include travel in both Canada and the United States.

The 15-Day Northeastern North America Rail Pass can be sold only to international customers who live outside of the U.S. and Canada and is good for travel in the Northeastern U.S. and Eastern Canada only. Proof of such residency is required (passport containing a non-immigrant visa). The passenger must carry this proof at all times when traveling. Trip must include travel in both Canada and the United States.

AMTRAK RAIL PASS: NATIONAL AND REGIONAL PASSES

There are several AMTRAK PASSES:

The Far West pass covers trains from the Pacific inland to Denver, Albuquerque and El Paso, and the Western pass lets you explore from the Pacific across to Chicago and down to New Orleans. Western and Eastern passes both permit travel on the City of New Orleans train. Coastal passes allow 30 days travel in either the west (from Vancouver down to San Diego) or the east (Montreal to Miami). Peak season is from June to early September and the following $US prices currently apply

Application:
  • Tickets can be issued for travel on Metroliner, the high-speed all-reserved train between New York City and Washington, D.C. for a supplemental charge.  You can plan your travel mid-day Monday through Friday or anytime on weekends and receive 50% off the supplemental charge for Coach Class travel on Metroliner.

Children:

  • Age 2 - 15 pay 50% of full fares.
  • Children under 2 travel free.

Seat Reservation:

  • Pass allows the boarding of a train but does not guarantee a seat.
  • Seat reservations in advance at any station upon arrival are recommend and subject to handling fee.

Validation:

  • Pass must be used within Six ( 6 ) months from the date of issue & non-endorsable, non-reroutable.
  • Fares are valid for 15 or 30 days of travel, with unlimited stopovers.
  • Tickets issued in conjunction with USA Rail Pass are valid on all routes except Auto Train to Florida.
  • The ticket is non-transferable.
  • Passengers must obtain a ticket (=reservation) at an Amtrak ticket office before boarding a train. There is no fee for reservations.

Lost or Stolen:

  • No compensation on lost or stolen of pass in any reasons.

Baggage:

  • Passengers may check-free of charge-up to two pieces of baggage.  Total insured weight is not to exceed 100 lbs.  Liability is limited to US$250.00 for each pass bearer.  There is a charge for bicycles fo $25 per day.

Application:
  • The CANRAILPASS is not transferable.
  • The CANRAILPASS is available both inside and outside Canada.
  • A CANRAILPASS holder must have completed his/ her journey by midnight on the last day of travel on which the pass is valid.
  • A ticket for each journey must be secured by the holder upon presentation of the CANRAILPASS to an authorized VIA sales agent. An unused ticket must be returned and CANCELLED.
  • Upon request, the holder must produce suitable ID or sign his/ her rail ticket.

Remark:

  • The number of seats available for CANRAILPASS holders is limited. Advance reservations is recommended.
  • A CANRAILPASS holder is entitled to basic economy class accommodation. Passenger may upgrade to sleeping accommodation or VIA 1 class by paying the applicable surcharge. However, during the summer high season, between Toronto and Vancouver, the upgrade to sleeping accommodation can only be made within 21 days of departure.
  • A CANRAILPASS holder is entitled to any discount available in sleeping accommodation or VIA 1 class as long as fare plan conditions are met.

Validation:

  • 12 selected days of economy class travel within a 30-day period on all VIA trains and the connecting bus service between Moncton and Saint John N.B. and connections between Charny and Quebec City. (Trains and buses listed in the VIA timetable, but operated by other companies are excluded.)
